Where Should I Start? At the End!

As certified move managers, one of the most common things we hear is:

“I want to get organized, but it’s just too overwhelming. I don’t even know where to start.”

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. After helping thousands of people navigate the organizing and downsizing process, we’ve found a powerful mindset shift that makes all the difference. It comes from Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and it’s called:

Habit #2: Begin With the End in Mind

This habit is about getting clear on where you’re going before you start. When it comes to organizing your home (or your life), it’s incredibly effective.

Before you touch a single drawer or storage bin, take a moment to visualize your ideal space.

Close your eyes and ask yourself:

  • What does my ideal space look like?

  • How does it feel to be in that space?

  • Are there any sounds—music, laughter, quiet?

  • What does it smell like—fresh linen, candles, clean air?

Be as detailed as you can. Is it minimalist and peaceful? Warm and cozy with family photos everywhere? Filled with books, art, or sports memorabilia? Do you want a space that’s ready to entertain guests—or one that feels like a private retreat?

There’s no right or wrong answer.

Next, write down or draw a picture of what you imagined. Then post it somewhere visible so you can stay focused on your goal as you begin to declutter and organize.

The Power of Just 15 Minutes a Day

Once your vision is clear, you don’t have to do it all at once. Here is what Smart Moves suggests:

🕒 Set a timer for 15 minutes a day for the next two weeks.

That’s it. Just 15 minutes.

Choose one small, manageable area to start—ideally, something that’s not emotionally overwhelming. Think:

  • A junk drawer

  • A medicine cabinet

  • A shelf of paperwork

  • A small section of your closet

Then:

  • Sort through the items

  • Decide what aligns with your vision

  • Make a plan for the rest (donate, discard, recycle, gift)

You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just two weeks with 15 focused minutes a day. You will be strengthening your downsizing muscle and building momentum as you go.

Creating the Space You Deserve

Getting organized doesn’t have to be overwhelming. When you begin with the end in mind and commit to small, consistent action, you create a path toward the intentional and inspiring space you deserve.

And remember: you don’t have to do it all at once. You just have to start.
